The depth of the movement shaking two weeks now Greece, after the assassination of the young Alexis by the Police, is clearly shown also by the fact that artists and creators in the cultural field are actively involved in the revolt. Yesterday night the government wanted to inaugurate the renovated building of the National Theater in Athens and all the elite was invited, from the actual Minister of Culture Michalis Liapis, a man totally lacking any culture, to George Papandreou, leader of the official Opposition Party PASOK and chairman of the Socialist International, and to members of the big bourgeoisie, ship-owners, bankers etc. At the inauguration the premiere of a new play should be performed. But everything has collapsed as ore than a hundred of activists-actors intervened with banners and slogans calling for the release of all the arrested during the revolt (about 200) and against the government of the murderers. The whole event had to be cancelled and the elite run scared at their homes or villas in the suburbs.

Great concerns were raised throughout Greece by a second attack by gun two days ago against a 16 years boy, the son of a cadre of PAME / KKE in Peristeri, a working class neighborhood, in the greater region of Athens. The police try to cover up the whole affair claiming that somebody else did the assassination attempt; but a .38 millimeters gun is the official weapon of the Greek Police…Fortunately, the kid, after surgery does not present serious problems. Two marches of protest against this new attack took place today in Peristeri, one by the school of the injured boy, another organized by the Communist Party, KKE. Yesterday, too, the marches in Peristeri were not united: the Stalinist KKE had its own separate march, and the extra-parliamentary Left another one.

The day appeared initially a very difficult one for a demonstration because of the very bad weather and continuous rain. But despite the rain (later on, the day, fortunately, became sunny and then cloudy from the tear gas of the riot police) a tremendous march of 50.000 students, schoolchildren, workers and organizations of the Left has shaken Athens. It marked the success of this national day of struggle, December 18, coinciding with the stoppage of ADEDY (National Federation of Public Employees) and the 24 hours strike of the hospital workers of the country. (Yesterday the march of the Stalinist KKE had, according to the figures given by the KKE itself about 7.000).

Current developments turn around the strike or rather the 4 hours stoppage in the public sector announced for tomorrow Thursday December 18 by the ADEDY, the National Federation of Public Employees( which is led by PASOK trade unionists but where are present other forces too, including the revolutionary Left and EEK). The PASOK led General Confederation of Labor-GSEE (covering the private sector) refused to join in the action and decided to organize only a formal meeting in front of the parliament a day after, on Friday December 19 to protest for the new government budget. To add to the confusion, the Stalinist led PAME, the trade union organization of KKE, organized its own separate (as usual) rally and a march one day before, today December 17. The government and the Police praised the orderly way that the PAME/KKE march took place “without any damage to property or to the public order”…

This morning started with a very unpleasant surprise for the riot police, the special force against popular mobilizations, which is busy all these days of popular revolt in Greece to attack and brutalize13-14 years old kids: their central headquarters/caserne in the Kaisariani area, in Athens, was put under siege for hours by a multitude of young people throwing to them stones and Molotov cocktails.

STATEMENT OF THE INIATIVE FOR THE REVOLUTIONARY WORKER’S PARTY (DIP)
Greece is in revolt!
Solidarity with the fraternal Greek people in revolt!
Since the murder of a fifteen-year-old youth in Greece on Saturday the 6th of December, the masses have erupted, protesting day and night against the Greek government. This is a revolt in the strict sense of the term! Greece has not seen such a massive revolt since the insurrection of 1944 under Nazi occupation and the Polytechnic revolt of 1973 under the military junta in power between 1967 and 1974.

Today Monday, December 15, 10th day for the revolt in Greece after the assassination of the young Alexis Grigoropoulos, at noon and four hours, thousands of young schoolchildren 14-16 years old surrounded the Central Police Headquarters in Athens, in Alexandras Avenue. There was massive presence of the riot police in full battle dress and Police gig vehicles ready to take possibly the arrested. The young boys and girls were not intimidated. They shouted non-stop militant slogans against the police and the government of the murderers, and from time to time they throw against the riot police, when the policemen started to move threateningly, eggs, yoghourts and other objects. About 15.00 pm the riot police attacked the kids with chemical gazes and globs. The clashes continue another hour before the end of the action.

The Greek Intifada continues and the government is unable to impose its control in the country, spreading fears among the ruling classes all over the European Union. In the EU Summit in Brussels, Sarkozy but also the other bourgeois leaders demanded to the Greek right wing Prime Minister Karamanlis “to arrest immediately those responsible for the chaos”. So in today’s demonstration in Athens of tens of thousands of schoolchildren, students, parents, teachers and professors, the riot police tried to make mass arrests of 12-15 years boys and girls. The teachers and parents intervened to save the kids, fought with Police and liberated most of them apart from 3(more or less kids of 12-13 years old) who are added to the 176 already officially arrested.
